The equality, unity, peace and love narrative relevant to today’s society speaks to a worldwide stage and perspective. Likewise does Daniel Anderson’s installation,
‘THE DREAM CONTINUED’ and its counterparts which allow the viewer to witness children playing the most innocent and simple game of jacks. Inferred is their innocent awakening to the world at their fingertips. The girl holds the ball/globe in her hand and anticipates the opportunities that symbolically lie in front of her; the impact she makes on her society depends on her own actions. Implicit is the desire that every person participate in an all-accepting and unified world.
The work addresses multiple aspects of race and gender with its mélange of ethnicities living together in work, play and life. This acceptance and coexistence of diversity is what the great Dr. Martin Luther King envisioned in his iconic ‘I HAVE A DREAM’ speech: “And if America is to be a great nation, this [equality] must become true.” Inherent in the children’s expressed anticipation is the realm of possibilities that the future holds. The installation’s message lectures to societal reality and speaks to the world.
